“The one thing we should be talking about is mental well-being. Specifically grief.”

“The pandemic has brought into light so many things we haven’t processed in terms of grief: loss of identity, loss of plans and expectations, loss of friendships, loss of jobs, loss of family connections, loss of recreational activities. And when it goes unprocessed, grief ends up leaking out in non-consensual and non-productive ways.

“In terms of how it relates to work, it ends up showing up as lethargy, fatigue, lack of motivation. It ends up showing up as short tempers, taking things super personally and assuming the worst intent. It can show up as emotional vulnerability that you weren’t really planning on sharing in a work context, but now here it is. And that, combined with the distributed work environment, is just a perfect storm of pain, right? So until there’s space and containers for acknowledging and processing grief, I think there’s going to continue to be unexpected harm in professional relationships as well.”
